et une petite bo\u00eete dans la main gauche.  Le personnage, \u00e0 l&rsquo;allure juv\u00e9nile et sans \u00e2ge, porte un manteau retenu devant la poitrine par une broche triangulaire d&rsquo;aspect floral, sur une longue robe. Le regard est dirig\u00e9 vers l&rsquo;avant et la t\u00eate est l\u00e9g\u00e8rement inclin\u00e9e vers la gauche. Le visage allong\u00e9 est travaill\u00e9 plastiquement : les grands yeux en amande, aux paupi\u00e8res sup\u00e9rieure et inf\u00e9rieure accentu\u00e9es, sont ouverts avec vigilance et des sourcils aux ar\u00eates vives d\u00e9bouchent directement sur la racine du nez. Le nez droit au-dessus de la bouche prononc\u00e9e compl\u00e8te le visage ovale id\u00e9alis\u00e9 de la sculpture et son expression calme et int\u00e9rioris\u00e9e. Mais ce qui est particuli\u00e8rement remarquable, ce sont les boucles, qui ne sont que partiellement ma\u00eetris\u00e9es par un simple bandeau. Comme gonfl\u00e9s par le vent, les cheveux aux m\u00e8ches parfois parall\u00e8les, parfois sauvagement torsad\u00e9s et richement boucl\u00e9s, se d\u00e9tachent de mani\u00e8re dynamique des oreilles. La t\u00eate inclin\u00e9e avec ces ondulations de cheveux sur les c\u00f4t\u00e9s donne ainsi une impression imm\u00e9diate de mouvement. Le caract\u00e8re corporel de la sculpture est particuli\u00e8rement exprim\u00e9 par ce mouvement organique, proche de la vie, de la chevelure d\u00e9tach\u00e9e.  <\/p>\n\n<p>L&rsquo;impression g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de vivacit\u00e9 du personnage est \u00e9galement renforc\u00e9e par la banderole enroul\u00e9e \u00e0 plusieurs reprises que Jean pr\u00e9sente au spectateur. La surface de la main droite tendue vers l&rsquo;avant a un effet \u00e0 la fois intime et confidentiel, et mystique et r\u00e9v\u00e9lateur. Cette banderole s&rsquo;enroule en courbes douces devant le corps, fait un pli sur le deuxi\u00e8me attribut dans la main gauche et retombe de mani\u00e8re d\u00e9contract\u00e9e. L&rsquo;extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 enroul\u00e9e en volute de la banderole montre clairement la texture fine de la banni\u00e8re et attire en m\u00eame temps le regard du spectateur sur la petite bo\u00eete cubique que Johannes pr\u00e9sente entre ses doigts fins et longilignes. Le cube est orn\u00e9 d&rsquo;un motif gothique \u00e0 quatre passages que l&rsquo;on retrouve souvent dans la mesure architecturale des fen\u00eatres, mais qui \u00e9tait \u00e9galement volontiers utilis\u00e9 pour d\u00e9corer des coffrets et autres petits objets pr\u00e9cieux. Les gestes amples dans la pr\u00e9sentation des attributs sugg\u00e8rent l&rsquo;espace, en contraste avec les plis tubulaires \u00e0 la base du cou et les drap\u00e9s compliqu\u00e9s dans des parties plates et plusieurs fois superpos\u00e9es du v\u00eatement. Les courbes douces des plis donnent l&rsquo;impression que le v\u00eatement est taill\u00e9 dans un tissu lourd qui tombe en diagonale sur le devant et est plac\u00e9 dans plusieurs plis en cuvette sous la main droite.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Dans l&rsquo;ensemble, l&rsquo;\u0153uvre sculpturale t\u00e9moigne d&rsquo;un savoir-faire artistique de tr\u00e8s haut niveau, dont l&rsquo;impression g\u00e9n\u00e9rale pr\u00e9cieuse et repr\u00e9sentative souligne la virtuosit\u00e9 de la sculpture. Les caract\u00e9ristiques distinctives que l&rsquo;on reconna\u00eet ici se retrouvent dans des \u0153uvres picturales comparables provenant d&rsquo;Utrecht vers le milieu du 15e si\u00e8cle, \u00e9poque \u00e0 laquelle l&rsquo;art sculptural &#8211; en particulier la sculpture sur pierre &#8211; se distinguait par une qualit\u00e9 remarquablement \u00e9lev\u00e9e. Il convient de souligner le type de t\u00eate accentu\u00e9 d&rsquo;Utrecht, avec un visage ovale allong\u00e9, des yeux en amande aux paupi\u00e8res lourdes et des touffes de cheveux denses et saillantes qui encadrent la t\u00eate. Par exemple, la figure est comparable \u00e0 un chapiteau d&rsquo;ange sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 est du jub\u00e9 de la Joriskerk d&rsquo;Amersfoort (province d&rsquo;Utrecht) datant du deuxi\u00e8me quart du 15e si\u00e8cle. Non seulement la physionomie et les cheveux, qui sont un peu plus horizontaux sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 dans l&rsquo;exemple comparatif, mais aussi le bourrelet du v\u00eatement au-dessus de la ceinture sont similaires. Des motifs encore plus proches, comme les plis de la cuvette habilement plac\u00e9s, se retrouvent sur la statue en calcaire de Ste. Agn\u00e8s vers 1450 (Centraal Museum Utrecht 1788-003). En outre, les cheveux sont ici d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s en \u00e9ventail sur les c\u00f4t\u00e9s de la t\u00eate, de mani\u00e8re similaire \u00e0 la coiffure. Il en va de m\u00eame pour l&rsquo;image du manteau protecteur d&rsquo;une sainte. Sainte Ursule vers 1460-70 en bois de ch\u00eane (Amsterdam Begijnhof, chapelle), dont les cheveux semblent \u00ab\u00a0empil\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb de mani\u00e8re uniforme autour de la t\u00eate. Cependant, dans l&rsquo;exemple comparatif, la chevelure semble moins agit\u00e9e et donc plus retenue ; les rides du bol semblent \u00e9galement plus profondes et plus anguleuses que chez le Jean pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 ici. C&rsquo;est pourquoi l&rsquo;ange peut \u00eatre situ\u00e9 stylistiquement entre Agn\u00e8s et Ursule. Des \u0153uvres plus tardives, par exemple une console d&rsquo;ange portant un blason vers 1475 en bois de ch\u00eane (Ordre des chevaliers allemands, Bailliage d&rsquo;Utrecht, Maison allemande), montrent des m\u00e8ches de cheveux s\u00e9par\u00e9es et parall\u00e8les vers le bas, qui semblent d\u00e9j\u00e0 recouvertes de mani\u00e8re mani\u00e9riste. De m\u00eame, sur un fragment en calcaire d&rsquo;un ange datant de 1480 environ (Leiden Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal B145), les cheveux sont travaill\u00e9s de mani\u00e8re plus uniforme et sym\u00e9trique que sur l&rsquo;ange pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 ici.
